MKWD Celebrates Water Consciousness Month 2025 with a Symposium on Water Security Challenges in a Changing Climate

Metro Kidapawan Water District (MKWD) recently organized a two-day event to raise awareness about water security and the importance of environmental protection in commemoration of World Water Day and the International Day of Forests. This year’s Water Consciousness Month celebration brought together fifty (50) junior high school students from different schools within the MKWD service coverage to participate in a symposium focused on the challenges of water security in the face of a changing climate.

The first day of the event, held on March 25, 2025, included informative lectures, presentations, and workshops at the MKWD Training Center, at the Manongol Reservoir Complex. Topics covered included climate change impacts on water resources, water conservation strategies and the role of MKWD in providing clean and safe water.

In addition to the lectures, the students actively participated in a workshop where they discussed environmental issues and came up with innovative solutions to address these challenges.

On March 26, 2025, the students were taken on a guided tour of MKWDโ€™s facilities, where they gained firsthand knowledge of how the water district manages water distribution and water treatment processes. The tour included a visit to the watershed area at Brgy. Perez in Kidapawan City.

A special highlight of the day was the presence of the MKWD mascot Kid Tubig, who welcomed the students upon arriving at the watershed area.

One of the key activities of the tour was the ceremonial tree planting. The students, led by MKWD staff, planted Sagimsim saplingsโ€”an endemic species native to the area. The tree planting activity emphasized the importance of forest conservation in maintaining a healthy watershed which is vital for ensuring the availability of clean water.

By involving students in these educational activities, MKWD hopes to inspire young environmental advocates who will actively contribute to the conservation of water resources and the protection of the environment.

This event was spearheaded by MKWD’s Public Relations Unit under the Office of the General Manager.
